NYC entry for Clipper Cup

A 68-foot raceboat will carry the hopes of New York City for a Clipper Race victory in the next around the world race scheduled to start this year. New York Clipper will be competing in the Clipper Race for the third time during the sixth round the world yacht race of it’s kind run by international marine events company Clipper Ventures.

From the Clipper Race press release: Supported by the New York City Sports Commission New York Clipper will be attempting to beat its third place podium position in the Clipper 05-06 Race and make it third time lucky to win the prestigious Clipper Trophy. New York joins a number of international cities and regions who have put their names to the 68-foot state-of-the-art racing yachts including Durban, Singapore, Qingdao and Western Australia.

Clipper Chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston said: “I am pleased that New York will be represented once again in the Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht Race. In addition to their podium position in the last race New York Clipper delivered $6.1 million in total media returns and the race itself generated more than $50 million in global media coverage. I am confident these figures will be exceeded ih the Clipper 07-08 Race.”

Kenneth Podziba, Commissioner of the New York City Sports Commission said: ‘I am delighted that once again New York will be represented by an entry in the prestigious Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and that the yacht, New York Clipper, will be proudly representing our city in many ports around the world. This is a marathon of a race and the crew will face many exacting challenges during it. I am sure they will tackle all of them successfully and be a great example and credit to our city. I wish them every success.’

Towards the end of their 35,000 mile journey in Spring 2008 the fleet are scheduled for a stopover in North Cove Marina, Manhattan at the end of one of fourteen individual races that will make up the Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht Race. It will mark the second time the race fleet has been hosted by the Marina, located in the heart of New York’s financial district, with North Cove playing host to the New York stopover during the Clipper 05-06 Round the World Yacht Race.

The hunt is now on to find New Yorkers ready to take up the challenge of crewing New York Clipper to victory in the Clipper 07-08 Race. There are still a few places left including places to do the full circumnavigation. No previous sailing experience is required as full comprehensive training is provided.
