West Marine Offers DeLorme inReach

YARMOUTH, Maine – DeLorme, the innovation leader in personal satellite messaging, tracking and navigation technology, today announced that West Marine, the country’s largest retailer of boating supplies and accessories, is now selling the new DeLorme inReach two-way personal satellite tracking, SOS and communication products in select stores and online at www.westmarine.com.
inReach is the world’s first affordable two-way global satellite communication device, offering Follow-Me/Find-Me tracking and locating, SOS alerting with message delivery confirmation and text/email messaging with a wireless connection to an Apple or Android smart mobile device. It uses the Iridium satellite network for global coverage, high network reliability and fast data connections with end-to-end message delivery in under 60 seconds anywhere on Earth.
“inReach provides an extra margin of boating safety, augmenting other one-way emergency transmitters,” said Patrick Shay, DeLorme vice president and general manager. “The Iridium two-way data link provides a critical tool for search-and-rescue authorities to determine whether an SOS message is a false alarm, communicate with the sender to discover the nature of the emergency prior to launching a response and reassure the sender that help is on its way.”
The ruggedized inReach handset is waterproof, buoyant, dustproof, impact resistant and tolerant of high and low temperatures. Tests have shown that it maintains GPS tracking even under difficult conditions.
“InReach is much more than an emergency beacon,” said Shay. “The complete inReach experience also provides peace of mind through its remote tracking and locating features, along with the convenience of two-way text messaging from anywhere on the globe, social media posting capabilities, and unlimited downloadable maps and charts.”
The inReach unit automatically transmits its GPS position at regular intervals. Friends and family can log onto DeLorme’s Mapshare website to view the sender’s latest position, breadcrumb trail and message history on a map display. They can also ping the inReach at any time to get an instant update of its current location.
DeLorme’s free Earthmate app controls the interface between the inReach and smart mobile device. The app installs on a smartphone or tablet and supports free downloads of topographic maps or NOAA nautical charts, providing a portable backup GPS navigator if the boat’s primary navigation systems should fail. It also enables full two-way texting with any mobile or email address when boating beyond the range of shore cellular networks or VHF radio.
BoatUS, a West Marine and DeLorme partner, is also offering a special program to make inReach satellite service available to contact TowBoatUS and Vessel Assist.
“Our biggest challenge to a swift response for towboat assistance is locating boaters on the water when they are outside the range of cellular networks or VHF radio,” said Jerry Cardarelli, BoatUS vice president of towing services. “With inReach, our towing captains can get continually updated position coordinates for the boat. It saves valuable time finding the caller’s location, and the BoatUS dispatch centers can ping the vessel at any time to get accurate GPS position.”
The inReach won the National Marine Manufacturers Association Innovation Award at the 2012 Miami International Boat Show and has garnered numerous other accolades since its introduction to the market in November 2011.
