West Marine announced its first annual Green Product of the Year contest at the 2009 Miami International Boat Show in February. The nation’s largest marine retailer will award one prize of $10,000 to the winner at the 2010 Miami show.

According to Geoff Eisenberg, the company’s CEO, “One of West Marine’s goals is to be a leader in sustainability. Through this initiative we hope to encourage innovation and a steady stream of environmentally-friendly products so our children, and our children’s children will have the opportunity to enjoy plentiful oceans and beautiful blue waters, as we have.”

The competition is open to individuals, manufacturers, distributors and/or inventors of boating products. A panel of judges including Randy Repass, chairman and founder of West Marine and Ruth Wood, president of BoatU.S. Foundation, will select a winner based on eco-effectiveness, cost effectiveness, applicability and breadth of market impact, degree of innovation and originality and compliance with the official rules of the competition.

An entry form, rules and entry requirements can be found at www.westmarine.com/green.
