Retired Vice Admiral of the U.S. Navy Thomas R. Weschler, who survived the sinking of the aircraft carrier USS Wasp in 1942 and later was an aide to Admiral Arleigh Burke, died in April in Mystic, Conn. He was 98.
Weschler, of Erie, Pa., served as an officer on numerous Navy ships, commanded destroyer and amphibious squadrons and earned the Distinguished Service Medal in Vietnam. He later taught at Naval War College in Newport, R.I., during which time he was active in Tall Ships America. He helped raise money for the construction of Oliver Hazard Perry, which was commissioned in 2013.
