Sad event yields voyager’s wisdom

Veteran ocean racer Bruce Schwab, who has twice raced around the planet alone, the latest being the 2005 edition of the nonstop Vendee Globe race, sent out a sad and emotional note regarding the untimely passing of his younger brother:

“Sometime last Saturday evening, my youngest brother, Christopher Thomas Schwab passed away.”

Bruce goes on to describe his relationship with Christopher while both were involved in competitive bicyling in California. And how Christopher ceased competing and slid toward tough times.

The essence of Bruce’s message carries great weight from so accomplished an ocean racer who has not let lack of big time funding stop him from fulfilling his dream of racing a fast boat around the world. Bruce writes:

“Life is short, so live fully and keep smiling whenever you can.”
