Recent news reports told the sad story of a San Francisco to Seattle catamaran delivery gone terribly wrong. As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, on Sunday, December 17the U.S. Coast Guard suspended search activities for the crewmembers of a 50-foot catamaran that was being delivered to Seattle, but which washed ashore capsized near Lincoln City, Ore. Coast Guard spokesman said conditions offshore in the past week had been rough with 30 to 40 foot seas and sustained winds of 35 knots. According to the Coast Guard, the boat departed San Francisco on Dec. 8 and was supposed to arrive in Seattle on Dec. 15. Rescue workers who searched the vessel found a float-free EPIRB in a locker. Restrained from floating clear of the wreck, the EPIRB never activated.
