Introductions and captions by Calvin Siegal & Llewellyn Howland III
Since 1947, Norman Fortier and his camera have been documenting yachting and life on the south coasts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, including the Cape, the Islands and Newport. His photos tell the story of sailors, harbors, boats and fisherman in a time that is quickly fading from memory.
On The Wind is a masterfully edited collection of over 100,000 of Fortier’s images. It is a beautiful anthology of well-captioned duotones that capture the essence of a very special place and time. The book takes us through Fortier’s early days as a photographer and through his eyes we move through time. Whether it be racing on Buzzards Bay, a cold winter’s day on Cuttyhunk Island or a peaceful afternoon in Hadley Harbor, Fortier transports us to a place many readers will yearn to return to.
