Life after SPAM

Heading to sea for extending periods requires careful planning, particularly in the food-preparation department.

Several readers responded to the feature on Eric Forsyth in Ocean Voyager 2000 asking for more information on the canned-food company Forsyth described as a favorite source (other than SPAM) for voyage provisioning. The company, Werling and Sons, Inc., of Burkettsville, Ohio, established in 1886, often supplies sailors requiring quality canned meat products, according to Ed Werling, grandson of the company’s founder.

“People come to us because our products are enamel-lined canned meats that have a shelf life of two years,” Werling said. “And we ship UPS anywhere in the world.”
