During the Cape Town – Abu Dhabi leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, the race boat Team Vestas Wind ran aground on Cargados Carajos Shoals, north of the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The race boat was reportedly sailing at 19 nights at night when it grounded. No word yet on the why of the grounding, whether it was a human navigational error or an electronic malfunction, but Team Vestas Wind was doing what race boats do in these types of ocean races, trying to go as fast as possible over the shortest possible course to the finish line. Luckily, none of the crew on board suffered any serious injuries and the crew have been rescued. The boat still lies atop the reef, awaiting salvage.

The Volvo Ocean Race video below includes footage of the dramatic, high-speed grounding.
