Tall ships to invade U.S. East Coast

Traditional sailing ships from around the world will con-verge on the U.S. East Coast this summer to take part in races, parades of sail, and sailing festivals. Two American organizations, the American Sail Training Association (ASTA) and OpSail, are serving as organizers for the events that are being hosted in cities from South Carolina to Maine.

At least 100 large vessels, offering varying degrees of public involvement, are expected to take part in many of the events, including races from Bermuda to Charleston and from Boston to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Contact Steve Baker at ASTA in Newport, R.I., at 401-846-1775 or www.tallships.sail training.org; or Alma Viator at OpSail in Washington, D.C., at 202-955-5850or www.opsail2000.org for more information on ports and events.
