Weathertrack is a new, straightforward interactive GRIB-viewer application for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (iOS 3.0 or later). It’s an intuitive meteorological tool that puts vital weather information in the palm of your hand. With a GPS enabled iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, users can choose any location worldwide and customize GRIB parameters to provide wind speed and direction, precipitation, wave height and direction, current, barometric pressure and sea temperature.
The data in the GRIB files are arranged into an individual forecast for the GPS data you enter — detailed up to 0.5 degrees. You can also choose to open GRIB file attachments from e-mail messages or GRIB files from the iPhone Web browser for access to high-resolution, subscription-based services. You can also download GRIB files from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather models like GFS (Global Forecast System) and RTOFS (Real-Time Ocean Forecast System) by selecting an area of interest on a map and specifying a weather model, the data layers, grid spacing and forecast interval and length. The downloaded area is available offline, so you can display the weather forecast even if out of network coverage.
The application is easily navigated and also provides some help features. Released in February 2011, the application can be downloaded for $19.99 from the iTunes App Store and is available in English, Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Portuguese.
