Volvo Ocean Race starts third leg

The eight competitors in the Volvo Ocean race left Cochin, India on Saturday, bound for Singapore on the third leg of their round-the-world race.

From the International Herald Tribune:

The traditional second leg from Cape Town to Australia or New Zealand &mdash a journey characterized by howling storms, fierce seas and biting cold &mdash was dropped for a new 4,450-mile journey to Cochin.

The Volvo Ocean race started in Alicante and ends in June in St. Petersburg, Russia, after 10 legs and six in-port regattas.
