Expedition Research LLC has developed a handy resource app for new and experienced voyagers.
The app, called The Captain's Toolbox, is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, iOS 4.2 or later. All the information in this app is stored on your device, making it fully accessible when an Internet connection is not available.
The Captain's Toolbox includes:
-The complete International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS)
-An interactive and comprehensive collection of navigation lights and shapes
-GPS position
-USCG chart symbols
-Maritime flag identification
-SOLAS symbols
-Unit converter
-Procedures, examples, phonetic alphabet, channels and frequencies for VHF users in the USA, Canada and internationally (MCA)
-Glossary of 1383 maritime and yachting terms
-Meteorological definitions of cloud formations, with visuals
-Morse Code
-Wind barbs
-Sound signals
-United Nations Law of the Oceans and Sea
The Captain's Toolbox is available in the App Store for $4.99. Updates are included and the makers encourage suggestions for tools to include in future versions (maybe something for celestial navigators?). There is also a Lite version with samples of each database available free-of-charge. There is no word on whether it will be available for Android devices.
