Summer sailstice at 10

The annual celebration of sailing every June 21, dubbed Summer Sailstice by its founder San Francisco Bay sailor John Arndt, is now in its 10th year. And, just like the past few years, you might actually win a prize for your free participation  in what has become a worldwide event.

From the press release: Saturday, June 19th marks the 10th anniversary of a growing celebration of sail.  After the sun rises over the international date line in the Pacific the goal becomes to get as many sailboats out sailing over the next 24 hours, in as many time zones as possible.  You’ll be joined by sailors around the world as the sun rises and sails are hoisted with everyone encouraged to sound a blast and take a picture as the sun crosses their local solar noon.  Begun in 2001, Summer Sailstice was created as a holiday just for sailors to be celebrated wherever you sail in the Northern Hemisphere.

To participate sailors need to simply sign up at www.summersailstice.com and then go sailing on the weekend of June 19th.  The website allows you to post your sailing plans, invite others or see what other sailors are doing in your area. You can host a club open house, arrange a cruising rendezvous, hold a race or whatever you like for the Sailstice holiday.  There’s no better way to start the summer and no better weekend in the Northern Hemisphere to unite with all the sailors around the world.  Tallships, dinghies and everything in between can connect to create the world’s largest sailing celebration.

By signing up you can also help save the seas and get a chance to win from hundreds of sailing prizes.  Prizes have been donated by The Moorings, West Marine, Hobie, Offshore Sailing, Woodenboat and many of your favorite marine businesses.  Prizes include a grand prize of a one-week BVI charter with The Moorings, a Hobie Kayak and over 400 other prizes.  You will also have the opportunity to join other sailors committed to preserving the world’s oceans by contributing to Sailors for the Sea.  Sign up early and plan to get together with friends and family to celebrate life under sail on the weekend of June 19th.

Sail Locally, Celebrate Globally and join the whole world sailing!  Sign up at www.summersailstice.com and we look forward to sailing and celebrating ‘with you’ for Summer Sailstice 2010.
