Dr. Marty Krugman, head of the psychology department at Salem State, will lecture on “Preserving the Gloucester schooner
Adventure,” April 4, 7 p.m., St. Joseph Hall, 160 Derby St., Salem.
Dr. Krugman has spearheaded the campaign to restore the
historic Gloucester fishing schooner Adventure since 1995. “Save the
Adventure” has raised more than $2.5 million to date and expects to resume sailing the historic vessel in 2008.
The dory-fishing schooner
Adventure is the last of Gloucester’s famous fleet of Grand Bank fishing schooners. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark,
Adventure was built in 1926 at the John F. James Shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts. Constructed at the very end of the Age of Sail,
Adventure was an exceptionally fast and able vessel, the ultimate evolution of the fishing schooner.
Adventure was a highliner, the biggest moneymaker of her time, landing nearly $4 million worth of cod and halibut during her 27-year fishing career. When she retired in 1953,
Adventure was the only American dory-fishing schooner left in the Atlantic.
