San Diego Maritime Museum explores cartographic history

The San Diego Maritime Museum recently opened its exhibit

of antique maps and charts. Entitled “When California Was an Island,” the show includes charts from the 15th to 19th centuries that indicate the belief that California was not only an island but that it was within a few hundred miles of the Asian coast.

The exhibit is being offered in cooperation with antique map merchant Barry Lawrence Ruderman of La Jolla. For those who can’t make the trip, the gallery’s website features full-color scans of many of the shop’s antique and rare maps, www.raremaps.com. The exhibit runs until Sept. 6.
