In a magazine like Ocean Navigator, the photos play as big a part as the words, from the front cover all the way through. And we’ve been lucky to feature photos from some excellent photographers, including the Newport, R.I.-based dean of sailing photography: Onne van der Wal. His photos have graced several of our covers over the years and appeared inside the magazine as well.
Now, van der Wal has assembled 200 of his photos depicting every aspect of sailing across the U.S. into a large format book. Titled Sailing America, the beautifully designed book organizes its images by region, although it doesn’t have photos from every U.S. state.
This is a wonderful collection of sailing images. From the white-capped energy of big boats racing on carbon fiber sleds to the quiet beauty of cruising boats laying at anchor in the morning twilight, van der Wal captures the excitement and the contemplation that sailing brings. This is a marvelous book for any sailor who appreciates great images of the sport.
