The National Space-Based Positioning, Navigation and Timing Forum has conducted a review of the proposed LightSquared terrestrial broadband communication system. Because both systems occupy similar frequencies there is a perceived potential that LightSquared could interfere with GPS navigational systems. This report has recommended that the FCC deny LightSquared’s commercial deployment of its system.
In submitting this report to the FCC, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) summarized the findings as follows: “The results of these measurements clearly demonstrate that implementing the LightSquared Subsidiary LLC planned deployment for terrestrial operations poses a significant potential for harmful interference to Global Positioning System services.”
