Record time set in Marion to Bermuda Race

Sailing the 645 nautical miles from Marion to Bermuda in less than three days, Simon De Pietro's Briand 76 Lilla has set a new record on her maiden voyage. “We weren’t thinking about breaking any records before we left. But as we got like two days in we were looking good,” De Pietro told the Bermuda Sun.

With an elapsed time of only 68 hours, 58 minutes, and 45 seconds, Lilla was almost eight hours ahead of the next boat in, according to the Marion to Bermuda Race Web site. Preliminary results put Lilla both first in class and first overall on corrected time, for now, with many of the boats still on the course. Other finishers as of press time on June 21 were Pescatore, Margalo, Brigand, and Kiva.

The Marion to Bermuda Cruising Yacht Race has been run in odd-numbered years since its inception in 1977.
