PUTTING THE HEX on radio hoaxers. A 41-year-old Michigan man was sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay $6,000 in fines by a Federal judge recently after he was convicted of transmitting a false distress signal to the Coast Guard. The man was also hit with an $8,000 civil penalty by the Federal Communications Commission.

Officials reported the 41-year-old man was apprehended after his VHF radio signal was tracked by a helicopter. He was found to have transmitted false distress messages on two consecutive days on waters near Detroit.
