As X games-type sports like snowboarding and waveboarding increase in popularity, new twists are developed. Sometimes new gear spawns a whole new sport. That may be the case with a device called
Hangtimer, a watch that can measure the time a boarder spends airborne. Using three microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) accelerometers, it can sense and time the wearer’s “hangtime.”
This clearly has limited applications for voyaging boats. Except perhaps if you are in the Southern Ocean and launching off wave crests. But if that were the case, the last thing you might want to know is your hangtime!
