New transpacific race departs So. Cal.

The first San Diego to Hawaii Race is being initiated by the Silver Gate Yacht Club for 2002. The 2,323-nautical mile race will be the longest Pacific race, going to Nawiliwili Bay at Kauai, Hawaii.

The San Diego race, as yet without an official name, is expected to run in even years. The event is being produced in part for Southern California-area sailors, who normally have to go upwind and upcurrent to San Francisco, the starting location of the Pacific Cup Race, to race in even years. The TransPac runs in odd years (1997, 1999, etc.) out of Los Angeles.

The classes will be ULDB, PHRF, Double-Handed, IOR and Cruising. More information is available by calling Commodore Phil Kinnison at Silver Gate Yacht Club, at (619)-222-1214, or on line at www.sdwaterfront.com/g2h.
