The first annual Chuck Husick Marine Technology Award was presented at the Annapolis Sailboat Show on Oct. 6, 2011, to electronic chartmaker Navionics for its Navionics Mobile product, which allows electronic charts to be displayed on iPhones, iPads and Android phones. The presentation was at the Ocean Navigator booth at the show. On hand to help present the award and to commemorate the late ON contributing editor was Lawrence Husick, Chuck's son and a regular writer for the magazine. Also attending from the Husick family were Lawrence's wife Margaret and Chuck's sister, Judy Kaiser.
Accepting the award for Navionics was Jon Noel, mid-Atlantic sales rep for Navionics. As Peter Stoops, an experienced ocean sailor and one of the 12 judges, put it, the Navionics Mobile chart product was a excellent choice "in terms of how often it's used, how simple it is, how inexpensive it is, and how effective it is." Being able to access charts by simply pulling out your iPhone, iPad or Android phone makes Navionics Mobile a convenient planning tool and a great way to keep track of your vessel's position from anywhere on board your boat.
