Mari-Cha IV sets trans-Atlantic record

Capt. Charlie Barr’s 1905 trans-Atlantic record was meddled with once again by the rocket-like Mari-Cha IV, which appears to have established a new record for the crossing between New York and England. The 140-foot schooner shot across the Atlantic in just nine days 15 hours 55 minutes 23 seconds as part of the Rolex Transatlantic Challenge. While the record has been broken several times before, homage is still paid to legendary skipper Barr each time. Mari-Cha IV’s time was ratified by the World Sailing Speed Record Council. See www.sailspeedrecords.com for more information.

The Rolex Transatlantic Challenge is sponsored by Rolex; Moran Towing Corp. of New York; the Sandy Hook Pilots, who sponsored the legendary 1905 race; P&O Ports North America; and MedLink. The race is hosted by the New York Yacht Club with the support of the Royal Yacht Squadron.
