Briton Johnny Malbon has retired from the Vendee Globe with damage to his mainsail. Now, fewer than half of the original racers are still competing.

Artemis Ocean II’s mainsail has been deteriorating for the past three weeks, and in the last 24 hours it developed a metre-long vertical split.
“My heart is telling me to go on but my head is telling me I have to stop and in the end it is true – I have no choice,” added Malbon.
