Harken announced today that it has been named an official supplier of New York Yacht Club American Magic, Challenger for the 36th America’s Cup. The America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sports.
Harken is pleased to play an integral supporting role in this outstanding team’s Cup effort. Harken will supply deck hardware, winches, gearboxes, blocks and hydraulic components that will be used in American Magic’s AM38 test boat and AC75 racing boats. The equipment will be designed and built in Harken factories in Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA, and Limido Comasco, Italy.
“Over the years we’ve developed an acute appreciation for the New York Yacht Club's ability to deliver, and for their commitment to winning. Both are very evident in this campaign,” said Harken Chairman Peter Harken.
“If you look at the American Magic sailing, shore and production teams, there’s a depth of talent,” Harken said. “Terry Hutchinson has proven he can deliver results on the helm, as tactician or in a variety of strategic roles on a team. That proves he is a very strong collaborator, which is one of the most important qualities to have in a very large team with long-range aspirations. Then add Dean Barker and the rest of their roster, and they are even more formidable.
“Their leadership under Hap Fauth, Doug DeVos and Roger Penske knows getting better takes more than just funding. You need commitment and hard work. I think these guys in American Magic have grit. They come from a glamorous organization, but they will do the hard work and whatever it takes to win the Cup.”
“What you see in Harken is a company that’s always at the leading edge,” said Skipper and Executive Director of American Magic Terry Hutchinson. “In a campaign like ours, you look for every conceivable advantage. When you work with a company like Harken during a Cup cycle where everything is a clean slate, that’s what you expect to get.
