GPS testing to result in Hawaii outages

If you're lucky enough to be in Hawaii, be careful boating without knowledge of your position this weekend, and for the next three weeks.

An extended series of tests of the Global Positioning System of the Hawaiian Islands will take place between Sunday the 19th, and Sunday the 9th of September. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) both warns and encourages GPS users to be wary of the testing, and report any service outages to the USCG Navigation Center at (703) 313.5900.

Considering the recent rash of necessary rescues around the island chain in the past week, mariners ought to keep an attentive eye on the scheduling of the tests as well as their radios and all other communication gear.
