Fleming Announces Its New 78 Motoryacht

December 19, 2011 – Fleming Yachts is pleased to announce the addition of the new 78 to its line of 55, 58 and 65 foot models. Evolved from Fleming’s previous flagship, the Fleming 75, the 78 is essentially an all-new model. Her semi-displacement hull will be driven by twin MAN V12 1550 HP common-rail diesel engines providing the flexibility of cruising between 8 and 20- knots. MAN V8 1000 HP engines are offered as an option.

Compared to the 75, the 78 features a longer waterline created by extending the hull beneath the swim platform (which has been lengthened by one foot over the 75) and adding a bulbous bow. The keel of the 78 has also been lengthened to ensure protection of the running gear and provide superior tracking. The owner of hull number prefers long distance cruising at 8 to 10 knots, so the lower HP engines were specified along with a specially designed bulbous bow optimized for those speeds. According to Duncan Cowie of Fleming, fuel efficiency is improved by 13% at 8 knots, 10% at 9 knots and 7% at 10 knots over a Fleming 75 with the same horsepower. Top speed of this particular 78 with 1000 HP engines is 16.1 knots fully loaded. Projected top speed with the 1550 HP engines and slightly different bulbous bow is 23 knots.

The 78 features private crew quarters that include a double and single berth, head, shower, seating area, desk, microwave, refrigerator and a 15” Boning ship’s system monitor. Like all Flemings, a dedicated pilothouse allows operation of the ship without disturbing those in the salon or galley. The expansive main salon features a separate dining area adjacent to the gourmet equipped galley. A spacious midships owner’s stateroom and two guest staterooms, each with its own head and shower, are accessible from the pilothouse.

The exterior layout, highlighted by a dual-level flying bridge and a “California Deck” for dining and lounging, provides a number of options where guests can gather to enjoy the cruise. The upper bridge features the helm and twin, forward facing double seats as well as an adjustable double lounge platform. The lower bridge features a dining area, BBQ grille, wet bar, refrigerator, ice maker and settee. Aft is the large boat deck where a 15-foot tender is stowed. An aft facing control station takes the stress out of backing into a slip.

Beyond her traditional good looks and luxurious accommodations, the Fleming 78 is an engineering masterpiece, utilizing the best of today’s modern technology. Special attention is given to the engine room and separate machinery space to ensure easy access to all electrical and mechanical equipment for maintenance and inspection. Fly-by-wire steering is not only especially responsive, but it includes double redundancy systems. An Aquadrive anti-vibration system and extraordinary sound proofing measures ensure a whisper quiet, smooth ride. Sound levels in the pilothouse at cruising speeds are barely measurable at 58dBA. Even at wide open throttle, the sound level approaches only 68dBA, the equivalent of a normal conversation.

To check on the ship’s systems, including navigations lights, tank levels, water pressure, fluid temperatures and more, a Boning Ship Monitoring System utilizes 15” color monitors located in the pilothouse, flying bridge and crew quarters. A series of CCTV cameras keeps watch for extra safety and security.

The solid fiberglass hull is hand-laid and reinforced by interlocking frames and stringers for stiffness and strength, and vinylester resins are used throughout to resist water below the waterline and eliminate fabric print-through on the hull and super structure. The flawless fiberglass work and exquisite teak craftsmanship are signatures of Taiwan’s premier Tung Hwa yard, where Flemings have been built for over 25 years.
