BT Challenge racer is safer offshore

A crewmember in the BT Challenge recently survived a shark attack in Australia but had to withdraw from the race because of an injury suffered in the unlikely melee.

While on a two-week rest stop, a British competitor from the yacht Ocean Rover was strolling through the Sydney Aquarium when a tank of reef sharks burst, covering him in a stream of water, wriggling sharks, and broken glass.

Although he nimbly dodged the sharks, he sustained an injury to his arm from a glass shard, which forced him to withdraw from the race. “Really, you have to laugh,” he told a local newspaper. “It’s just so bizarre. So weird.”
