Southampton University engineering student Katie Miller is aiming to becoming the youngest female competitor in the 3,000 miles OSTAR race between Plymouth, UK and Newport, RI.

The Southampton University yacht engineering student qualified for the May event by becoming the first woman to win the 1,000-mile solo Bluqube race which lead to her gaining the title of Young Sailor of the Year in 2007. Katie, who now lives in Lichfield when she is not at university or sailing, said: “I will single-handedly sail across the Atlantic dodging icebergs and whales and contending with the fog as well as having to deal with the isolation. It is a really big challenge but one I am really prepared for.
