A power voyaging rally sponsored by the San Diego Yacht Club (Ocean Navigator is a co-sponsor) called the Cruise Underway to Baja Rally (CUBAR) Odyssey is set to begin Oct. 30 with 30 boats participating on multiple legs from San Diego to La Paz in Baja. The 30 boats, ranging in size from 42 feet to 80 feet, will be assigned to one of three 10-boat squadrons for the legs that will include the six stopovers: San Diego to Ensenada, Ensenada to Turtle Bay, Turtle Bay to Magdelena Bay, Mag Bay to San Jose del Cabo, San Jose to Muertos Cove and Muertos to the finish in La Paz. Several of these legs will involve overnight passages. There will be events and arrival parties at each stop. The purpose of the CUBAR Odyssey is “To give power boaters an opportunity to experience long distance cruising to Mexico within the safety of a flotilla of 30 boats, replete with mechanical and medical personnel in the fleet.” As a powerboat rally, each accepted vessel needed to have a minimum range of 400 miles at eight knots to ensure it could reach the next fueling station. Each boat was also required to pass a comprehensive safety inspection prior to departure. We’ll have more on this power voyaging rally in the next issue.
