A dream fulfilled

A group of 29 tanned, salt-encrusted, and elated older men arrived in Mobile, Ala., to a hero’s welcome in January aboard the World War II landship LST 325, successfully delivering on their dream of rescuing a ship from virtual scrap on a Greek dock and crossing the Atlantic. The men (average age, 72) braved storms, engine troubles, and nay-sayers (in particular, the U.S. Coast Guard, which repeatedly advised the men not to make the trip), but all aboard seemed to agree that the 4,350-mile journey was the best experience of their lives.
