Ocean Navigator Contributor Alan Littell Dies

Alan Littell was a respected travel writer and author.

Alan Littell, a longtime contributor to Ocean Navigator, died Oct. 12, at the age of 95. He was with his family and friends at Hart Comfort House in Wellsville, N.Y., and the cause of death was a stroke.

His work regularly appeared in The Buffalo News, The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle and the Olean Times Herald. For 10 years, Littell was travel editor of The Hornell Sunday Spectator. He also wrote essays and opinion columns for The Ocean and Hornell newspapers and his hometown weekly, The Alfred Sun.

He served two years in the U.S. Army following the Korean War and was stationed in the U.S. and Japan. Littell began his newspaper career as a reporter for The Long Branch (N.J.) Daily Record and then was a reporter and political writer for The Traveler, an afternoon publication in Boston.

Littell was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Caroline Byass Littell, who died in 2015. He is survived by two sons, Harry Littell or Ithaca, N.Y., and Matthew Littell of Altadena, Calif; four grandchildren, Nora Littell, Charlotte Littell, Cameron Littell, and Mason Littell; and a brother, Robert Littell of Paris, France.
